The purpose of this project is to remote monitoring and control of the Energy meter and Water meter. This system enables the Electricity Department and Water Supply Department to read the meter readings regularly without the person visiting each house. This can be achieved by the use of advanced microcontroller MSP430 unit that continuously monitors and records the Energy Meter and Water Meter readings in its permanent (non-volatile) memory location. This system also makes use of a GSM modem for monitoring, reading and controlling of Energy Meter and Water Meter from a remote server automatically using the existing GSM networks for cellular phones.
The GSM modem which utilize the GSM network to send its power usage using the short message service (SMS) back to the energy and water provider wirelessly.
Traditional meter reading for electricity and water consumption and their respective billing is done by human operator from houses to houses and building to building. This requires huge number of labor operators and long working hour to achieve complete area data for reading and billing.
An effective means of data collection that allow substantial saving through the reduction of meter re-read, greater data accuracy, allow frequent reading, improved billing and customer service, more timely energy and water profiles and consumption trends updates, and better deployment of human resources.
The main objectives of the project are making the human life easy and comfortable using advanced microcontroller MSP430 and GSM technique.
The proposed remote meter system composed of several remote meters and a central server as shown in figure 1.
